A lovely birthday present for Marianne Vos. On Saturday, she took the victory after a strong team performance of WM3 Pro Cycling in the Rabobank 7-Dorpenomloop Aalburg, her hometown race in Brabant. Marianne rode to the finish together with team member Moniek Tenniglo who took the 2nd place.
The spectators in the town of Aalburg were spoiled from beginning to end with an entertaining race. WM3 Pro Cycling placed themselves at the front of the peloton after about 15 kilometres into the race. “Of course, we knew about the wind factor. We wanted to make the race and started to ride early on”, says DS Jeroen Blijlevens. A leading group was formed, including all 6 WM3 Pro Cycling riders.
The team took advantage of the wind once more not much later. Ten riders remained in the front, including Marianne Vos, Moniek Tenniglo, Riejanne Markus and Yara Kastelijn. “Moniek jumped away and got the company of Demi de Jong. Marianne consequently also made the jump”, says Jeroen Blijlevens.
The team tactics started at around 30 kilometres from the finish line when Moniek and Marianne alternately attacked. Demi de Jong was initially able to close some of the gaps, but her energy tank got empty. Marianne and Moniek got away and crossed the finish line hand in hand. Riejanne Markus tried to take the 3rd place but did not succeed and finished as 5th.
Moniek deserves a podium spot
“It has been a beautiful and special day for our team. Marianne wins on her birthday, in her hometown and after flawless teamwork”, says Jeroen Blijlevens. “It’s nice for Moniek to be back on the podium. She works very hard and sees all her efforts being paid back.”
